Because Life on Other Moons is a self-published book, you’ll unfortunately find errors in it. But I blame this mostly on the fact that it was my first book and it was published in a whirlwind (three months to write, edit, copyedit, and design; about two weeks to deal with printers and proofs). No matter how the errors occurred, they did, so I’ve started this corrections page to point out errors as they’re found. I’ve already corrected these mistakes in the e-book edition and the second print edition (available at Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retailers).
Please let me know via e-mail if you find an error. However, note that certain so-called errors may instead be style choices. These will mostly be issues of comma usage or abbreviation. While I try to use the Chicago Manual of Style for much of my copyediting, there are instances where I have to make an exception based on my own writing aesthetics. You’ll probably find that I’ve done that throughout the book.
NOTE: The page numbers below refer to the first/limited print edition. Page numbers in the second print edition will be off by two (i.e., limited edition page 11 is second edition page 9) from the dedication page all the way to the final story because I removed a couple of pages before the dedication—but the page numbers are back on track by the About the Author section because I inserted a Gratitude section before it.
Corrections to the Acknowledgments section
- On page 11, in the first full paragraph, second sentence, “writers and teachers who I’m proud to call friends and mentors” should be “writers and teachers whom I’m proud to call friends and mentors.”
Corrections to “Stopping to Talk to Porch Lights When the Moon Is Not Enough”
- On page 18, in the first full paragraph, last sentence, “aneurism” should be “aneurysm.” The word is spelled wrong.
Corrections to “King Henry on a Porch Swing”
- On page 47, the title of the story is “King Henry on a Porch Swing,” not “King Henry on a Porchswing.” The last word should be two words.
Corrections to “Life on Other Moons”
- On page 58, in the third full paragraph, third sentence, “down comes to it” should be “comes down to it.” The order of the words “down” and “comes” is wrong.
Corrections to “Love the Shoes”
- On page 71, in the first full paragraph, fourth sentence, the phrase “he didn’t blamed him” should be “he didn’t blame him.” The verb “blame” is past tense (wrong) instead of present tense (correct).
Corrections to “Home on the Moon”
- On page 79, in the first sentence, “The year 1974” should be “The year 1972.” U.S. involvement in Vietnam ended in 1973, so the year should be 1972.
Corrections to “Walking to Vietnam”
- On page 93, near the middle of the paragraph that began on page 92, “students starting pouring” should be “students started pouring.” The word “starting” is a typo.
- On page 96, in the first paragraph, second sentence, “shift” should be “shifted.” The word “shift” is a typo.
- On page 97, in the fifth paragraph, “mommy” should be “Mommy.” The word was meant to be capitalized.
- On page 98, in the first paragraph, “daddy” should be “Daddy.” The word was meant to be capitalized.
- On page 98, in the second paragraph, “science smart” should be “science-smart.” The hyphen helps clarify that this is a compound adjective.
- On page 99, near the beginning of the paragraph that began on page 98, “his father, who” should be “his father, whom.”
- On page 99, near the middle of the paragraph that began on page 98, “ploughed” should be “plowed.” The former is the British spelling of the word.
